2022.01.26 16:28 monolake78 Indiana Jones 4: Why the hate...REALLY?

Just rewatched this, and it's still a good movie to me. Better than Raiders? Of course not, but it's a perfectly good addition to the series.
Watching this again had me thinking: all the vitriol I've ever heard about the film is puzzling.
People complain about the ridiculousness of surviving a nuclear blast inside a lead refrigerator, or the existence of aliens, but they have ZERO problems suspending their disbelief when it comes to biblical, face melting ghosts, living after your heart has been ripped out (by hand no less), holy grails, magic rocks, the trance inducing Blood of Kali, immortality, an old knight who has lived for centuries, surviving a fall from a plane in an inflatable raft, surviving hundreds of miles underwater while clinging to a submarine etc.
Sure, LaBeouf is pretty annoying, and Ford is pushing it in the years, but the film is classic Indy...goofy, unbelievable, pulp adventures filled with humor, charm, chemistry and cool chase sequences (not to mention a pretty hot Cate Blanchett, but that might just be me...) So...why the hate? Really?

2022.01.26 16:28 TheLandBeforeWine Was this an OCI mistake?

2L at a non-predatory non-t14 school that accepted my first OCI offer pretty much without thinking back in August. I was anxious about my interview performance and retracted my other applications after receiving my first, largely at the suggestion of my school's career office. My goals after law school are to do big law transactional work and use that experience in-house a few years later in the same industry I was working in before law school. The firm I received an offer from is exactly the opposite: 50+ lawyer litigation boutique that (here's the kicker) I recently found out will NOT hire summer law clerks out of law school in 2023. This would mean that I'd be job hunting for a big law transactional position my 3L year with a slightly above median gpa and no transactional law experience.
Is it too late to look for a big law summer clerkship? Can I go back on this offer if I got it through OCI? How can I spin a summer at a litigation firm into relevant transactional experience? Thoughts?

2022.01.26 16:28 Gur_Deep Genesis 3

  1. Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
2. "And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;"
3. "but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.”
4. "Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die."
5. "For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6. "So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate."
7. "Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings."
8. "And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden."
9. "Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”
10. "So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”
11. "And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”
12. "Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”
13. "And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
14. "So the Lord God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust all the days of your life."
15. "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”
16. "To the woman He said: “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you.”
17. "Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:" “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life."
18. "Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field."
19. "In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread" Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.”
20. "And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living."
21. "Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them."
22. "Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever.”
23. "Therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken."
24. "So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life."

2022.01.26 16:28 MaintenanceKooky8271 It's Good To Cheat in A Relationship

That's simply how competition works.
There are almost 8 billion people on this planet. If you enter a relationship with one person and choose to stay with that person for the rest of your life, you're depriving yourself from entering a relationship with better romantic partners.
When it comes to finding a romantic partner people are nothing other than walking resumes. Some resumes are good, but with close to 8 bill people in this world you can always find a better resume.
Love and dating is a competition. When you go after a person that others want, you automatically engage in competition.
A common argument agains this is "hurr durr you'll die alone with this mindset"
There is nothing wrong with dying alone. All that matters is the life you lived. If you lived your life by limiting yourself to only one person, then you've done yourself a disservice because you didn't get to experience relationships with other people who had better resumes.
If you find someone who has a better resume then your current romantic partner (even if it's something as simple as good looks) don't hesitate to cheat on your romantic partnebreak up with them.
The reason that most people in society think that cheating is bad is because the majority of people have low self esteem and are extremely insecure. Some social norms are the result of a negative trait shared by the majority of people, such a low self esteem/insecurity.
In some cases (like this), the problem is with the many, and not the few.
Love is not a commitment. It's a feeling. If you're choosing to commit your life to one person who you no longer have strong feelings for, you will deprive yourself from the many other people in life who could give you that feeling.
That's not a lonely life. It's an extremely fulfilling life in which you have not limited yourself to one person.

2022.01.26 16:28 Ear_3440 Seeking info on staying in academia for teaching, not research?

Hi all. I’m currently in my 3rd year of a PhD in bio and feeling pretty burnt out by the environment I see for my advisors and other faculty. My advisors are great and don’t have toxic expectations for me, which is great, but they both work way, way more than I ever want to and are constantly chasing their next big grant despite climbing pretty much as high as they can in their field. Anyway, that’s all to say I definitely don’t envision a career like this for myself. I don’t want it. I do love teaching though. I’ve heard pretty conflicting things about jobs as teaching faculty or in PUI. I like the idea of having a focus on teaching, and lower pressure research demands. I also would like mentoring undergrads as researchers. Does anybody have any insight into what these jobs look like in terms of competitiveness, salary, security, workload? Thanks in advance!

2022.01.26 16:28 Zentar39 The first rough Draft Need some feedback, it's meant to be the background to the events

This is a Rough Draft of a sci-Fi I'm working on and would like some feedback, please.
At around the middle of the 20th-century mankind began their exploration of our local system, known as Sol, this expansion would falter after 6 landings on our nearest moon, the exploration would not start up again for 70 years. and would only include a temporary Luna colony set to last 15 years.
But this would still provide information on the planets, Mars and Venus, though it would be another 20 years before mankind would set foot on the red planet, this would begin a 7-year conflict as several nations would claim ownership of the Red Planet, though this would result in one of the first full nation colonies been established on both the moon and the Red Planet, and would see the end to several nations, it was also around this time the first unmanned space harvester was deployed and placed in orbit around Venus with further studies taking place for Mercury and the Sun.
with the inner solar system almost fully colonized and charted mankind set its sights on the outer worlds, the local asteroid belt would provide a near limitless amount of ores and other minerals that would further help the expansion of the Sol system.
Jupiter's moon of Io would be the site of Mankind's first stable base in the outer worlds though it would be closing in on 100 years after the first Luna colony was established, the colonization of the remaining moons would take only around 10 years, with 16 colonies built and several mineral Harvesters deployed into Jupiter atmosphere.
But it would be the Moon of Europa that would create the biggest stir, 6 years after the colony of Io would be founded, with the discovery of microscopic life, deep beneath the ice, this mankind knew it was not alone in the Galaxy or even our own system. this would fuel a massive endeavor, that would last the remainder of the decade, 15 years after the discovery of life from another world mankind launched the first unmanned Space station out beyond the Kuiper Belt, during the next 20 years the rest of our home system would become colonized. it was after the Science station Kuiper 1 was established that man would finally be able to build a maned Station beyond the Kuiper belt to replace the unmanned one.
It was now that Mankind made contact with its first intelligent Alien race, known as the Trilion, they mirrored the images Mankind had seen of Aliens going back over 200 years, this began the Human race luring of the Galactic Union and the thousands of Alien races that made it. but it would be around 20 years before we joined. The Union was built on common grounds and needs, The Trilion for example was great Diplomats, while the Xiquin were a warrior race, able to bluster the Unions Forces, what we brought was our fierce love for battle and conflict, the Xiquin were very impressed with this as it matched there own, we also had our DNA as it would turn our Human DNA is very adaptable it can be reshaped and blended with any other Carbon-based life with ease, this gave way to vast medical discovery's and treatments, the Union had found to be problematic as well as new races been created. Now as full members of the Union the Human race powered forwards and soon had hundreds of colony's beyond the Sol system,
It was out in the depths of Space the Union had discovered the ancient city's now lying in ruin and decay, this long-dead race became known as Guardians, and from what was gathered they were far more advanced than anything the Union could even dream of, rumors of space travel so fast they could cross the Galaxy in hrs while the Union could only achieve this in months, if not years, then nearly 300 years after mankind joined the Union a planet was discovered near the center of the Milky way, here we found a barely active Guardian city and at its heart a laboratory with a single fertile Embryo in it, this began Project Phoenix, from this we discovered one thing...
We should have left them extinct..........

2022.01.26 16:28 Salamanjam Dutch oven question

Hello!
I've been looking to buy a dutch oven for my sourdough bread baking needs + it would come in handy for preparing other different dishes.
It is 30cm (13 inch) in diameter, will it be enough for 500g flour recipes?
I have an induction stove, will this (https://i.imgur.com/Y1jynqt.jpg) work fine for my needs or should i try to find a different one? If so, what kind?
I really like that both the pan and lid can be used for cooking. The issue is that where i live, there is not much choice of dutch ovens in this style and ordering from abroad would cost a lot.
Thanks a lot for your answers in advance!

I'm looking to build the Y-1200 laser cutter (from further fabrications) and was curious how many other folks have built the same (or maybe modified) thing. This seems like a really clean and simple design from what I've seen so far. Just curious as to how many people are out there and in the same boat as me.
Would there be any interest in a discord for folks to chat about the build and offer up suggestions as to sourcing, potential upgrades, assembly advice, that sort of thing? Anyways, happy lasering to everyone!
